Goodbye Tatiana

There weren't too many surprises last night. I am pretty sure that everyone with the exception of Tatiana was resigned to who was going through as well. The group number was a little awkward, but at least it sounded like they were in tune and having fun. I did enjoy seeing my hot little Aussie, Michael Johns again, although the song didn't do much for me. I guess it was important to shamelessly plug the new Idol Experience at Disney, so who better to help them do that but Michael and Carly from Season 7?
Idol sure knows how to drag things out for contestants and audiences alike. The best comment of the night was when Ryan asked Danny how he was doing and he said "I would just like to know". Tatiana looked pretty unstable from start to finish. Like she was going to suffer a nervous collapse. After she heard that she wasn't moving forward she was getting some pretty awkward hugs from the other 11. Like they really didn't mean it.
I think Michael making it over Anoop or Anne Marie is not the way it should have happened, but I suppose not a huge surprise. I predict Anne Marie or Anoop Desai as the wild card.
Tune in next week....

The First 12

Just when you think you have this show all figured out they throw you a curve. This season there will not be elimination rounds, but selection rounds. The top girl and boy will make it to the top 12 and the person who earns the 3rd most votes. After the top 9 have been selected, there will be a wild card pick from each night. So this really is a make or break it night, and I actually think this method is a little less cruel then being the one that didn't get picked. As Ryan introduces the judges, he reminds us that this is Kara's first live broadcast. She confesses to some nerves, but also says that this show has changed her life.
Let's get it going:
1. Jackie Tone, age 28 from New York is first up and she chooses an Elvis classic, "Little Less Conversation". From the start she is comfortable and having a blast on stage, but I am NOT digging the red belt and the black spandex pants. She has a darling personality, but the vocal really doesn't wow me. If I am being honest, I wouldn't pay money to see this girl. Randy is not blown away by her vocal, but thought she was very entertaining. Kara told her she could work a stage and she showed who she was as an artist. Paula said "you got me up dancing", which was the last coherent thing she said. Simon thought Jackie played the part of a clown and didn't do herself any favors. After each performance the parents or significant other's of the contestants are waiting with Ryan, and Jackie is so darling with her parents that I really won't mind if she gets a second shot.
2. Ricky Braddey, a 26 year old from North Carolina who I am not sure I have seen before right now. Have I? He picks "A Song for you" and it is really a gorgeous vocal. When I closed my eyes, it was one of those that could easily be recorded. Problem is it didn't have enough spark for me. Randy said "this is the start of Season 8!" Kara told him he should feel really good about it, he killed it. Paula was so glad America was able to see what he could do. Simon brings everyone back to reality and tells Ricky he is a great singer who lacks confidence and charisma.
3. Alexis Grace, our 21 year old stay at home mom from Memphis, TN is next and she blows me away with "Never Loved a Man" by Aretha Franklin. I can't take my eyes off of this little girl, she has a command of the stage, and such a mature voice. Randy tells her she found the soul. Kara said it was like she released something from inside. Paula struggles with her thoughts, something like-your petite..big voice...Simon tells her best performance by a mile and that she reminded him of Kelly Clarkson.
4. Brent Keith, the 29 year old Ohio native decides to go country and sings "Hicktown". He is a darling man with cute dimples and a great smile, but this song is just awful. It isn't his voice I guess, it is just the dumbest, simplest song that I will never remember tomorrow. Randy thought he would make a great country singer, but Kara thought he had much more in him than what he showed everyone. Paula thought the song was safe, but she could see him singing country music. Simon said what I was thinking, "you had one shot and a nice voice, but the song was forgettable and you blew it." Brent doesn't think country fans will feel that way. Chris? Anyway, I already have moved on. If that is what he plans on selling, I won't ever be buying it.
5. Stevie Wright, the 17 year old who amazed me with her mature delivery of "At Last" in her audition, came out with a Taylor Swift song "You Belong with Me". It is bad from the word go. She can't control her nerves so her voice is all over the place and she can't keep her breath. Randy tells her it was not hot. Kara tells her she that this song completely confused her because she looks like someone having an identity crisis. Paula said the song was wrong for her. Simon lays it out for her, it was out of tune and her nerves got the better of her, but she should chalk this up as gaining experience that she can learn from. I have to hand it to her. She stays smiling and she stays composed, even after the hug from mom.
6. Anoop Desai, the 22 year old from Chapel Hill selects "Angel of Mine", which is kind of a weird choice, even for him. He has a beautiful spirit that you connect with when he sings, but the song is not all that inspiring. Randy liked it but thought it was a little sharp. Kara felt his connection. Paula thought it had a Brian McKnight feel. Simon thought it was too serious but hoped his massive appeal earned him another chance.
7. Casey Carlson is the darling 20 year old from Minneapolis who looked like she had it all going on in the interview, with the hair and make up, and then she started singing "Every Little Thing HE does is Magic", and totally blew any chance she had. It was so painful to watch her goofy facials and her weird dance moves that I had to turn away. What a shame, because the vocal itself wasn't awful, but the performance was so wrong. Randy said it was like karaoke. Kara said everything about it was wrong. Paula said the phrasing was weird and she just shouldn't have touched that song. She is exquisite but she needs to watch how she pulls faces and winks. Simon said the winking was the least of her problems, the song was terrible. Casey holds it together long enough to hug her mom and sit on the couch with Ryan.
8. Michael Sarver, our 27 year old oil rig roughneck from Texas came out next and picks "I don't wanna be" which I love, but I don't love it on him. The vocal is rough, and so is the awkward movement on stage. He sang better at his first audition. Randy said he likes him better singing soul. Kara said it was a crowd-pleaser, but not his best performance. Paula thought he did a really good job (go figure). Simon said it is not his best vocal, but that he hopes people pick up the phone and give him another chance, because he is one of those people that he would love to see get the opportunity.
9. Anne Marie Boscovich, age 22 from Nashville was next and performed "Natural Woman" of all songs. The vocal is actually very pretty, and she does finish on a high note. It just is a song that makes her seem like a much older girl. Randy said he didn't think it was a good song choice. Kara wanted to see her sing something more current, like "Love Song" to which Anne Marie made the mistake of saying "Oh, sing something not as good?". This made Simon's eyes get really big and caused Paula to say, "well this is awkward". Paula thought her vocal was better than Hollywood week. Simon said she was like a hotel singer. She wasn't good enough for that song. Her mom has a hard time, but Anne Marie keeps smiling.
10. Stephen Fowler, the 26 year old Ohio native who walked off the stage Hollywood week decided on "Rock With You". What? What is wrong with this group? I guess this is why none of them are stars yet. He starts off really flat, and even though he hits his stride at a certain point, the song rings false and cornball.
Randy said it was not the right song choice. Kara said she got more emotion from the song he forgot. Paula wished he had sung that song and proved he could do it. Simon said it was pointless.
11. Tatiana Del Toro, the resident crazy 24 year old from San Juan came out very "demure" and poised and actually didn't do a horrible job with "I'm Saving all my love" Why can't she just be 100% awful. Randy said she had moments. Kara was trying to figure out where she fits in with this industry. Paula said she is the most talked about contestants on the show, and that the song had beautiful moments. Simon said she is a drama queen and that no one wants to be famous as much as she does. She said "I am marketing myself". Then she walked up and kissed some cousins, (not real ones apparently, but she isn't interested in telling us who they really are). She then tells America that this is her dream and please vote for her.
Let's hope vote for the worst hasn't tuned in yet.
12. Danny Gokey, the 28 year old widower from Milwaukee decides to sing "Hero" to people out there who have some hard thing in their life they need to overcome. It is predictably a very commanding performance, with everything coming together, a great vocal and a whole lot of sincerity and charisma. Randy said it was blazing hot! Kara told him he was a hero. Paula said she had two words with hyphen "sold-out arenas" which is actually three words.Simon said good song, great singer, but he wasn't quite going nuts like the other three. He did enough for this night.
Top Girl-Alexis Grace
Top Boy-Danny Gokey
3rd-either Anoop Desai or Anne Marie Boscovich
Tune in tonight.....

Top 36

As Hollywood Week comes to a close, the Idol producers decide to switch things up on the contestants and instead of the dreaded elevator ride up to a board room, the judges felt the need to have them walk through a mansion and face them as they sat on big red thrones. It was a little bizarre, like some weird soap opera, only you can see the camera men. Let’s get to it, and in the interest of speed, I will place a number by your top 36.

1. Anoop Desai started us off, and was barely seated when they welcomed him to season 8.

2. Von Smith was one big hive before they finally let him off the hook and welcomed him aboard. He has been way too much for me, but in this setting I saw a side of him that I really liked. Unfortunately for him, we will always be able to tell when he is upset. Poor fair skinned boy.
Cody Sheldon, the androgynous scary film kid had to sing off with
3.Alex Wagner-Trugman. (sorry, if you haven’t watched the show, this method of mine will be very anticlimactic). This was some idol brain child’s great idea about how to make the top 36 selection even more stress filled and horrible than it already is. I guess crushing someone’s dreams isn’t quite dramatic and awkward enough for viewers. Needless to say, Alex, who looks like a sweet kid, probably has some humiliation of his own around the bend in a week or two. He has a nice voice, but seems way to sweet and everyday kid to be a superstar.
4. Adam Lambert was made to sweat for a couple of minutes, but we all knew this guy was going to be in it.
5.Taylor Vaifanua got through despite her lyric issues, and then we rolled out the welcome wagon for a bunch of girls.
6.Jasmine Murray (beautiful)
7.Arianna Afsar
8.Casey Carlson (funky and cute)
9.Megan Corkrey (long hair,darling)
10.Mishavonna Henson, and
11.Stevie Wright (16).
12.Joanna Pacitti, was welcomed despite singing in gibberish the night before, but if one is to believe the blogs, I heard that she was disqualified due to a previous recording contract. Didn’t we already know that? Anyway change that to
12.Felicia Barton who will take her place, even though I have no memory of this gal aside from her walk of shame.
Next up are some people who didn’t make it: T.K. Hash, Chris Chatman, and Reggi Beasley.
13.Kendall Beard our blonde Texan was teased about not getting in, but they didn’t string her out too long.
Jenn Korbee, in Simon’s words “the attractive one” sings off with
14.Kristen McNamara. Good singing wins the spot, but not before they rake poor Kristen over the coals for her terrible outfit.
15.Alexis Grace is the very young single mom who added pink to her hair just prior to Hollywood week. I love her voice, but the hair is awful.
16.Scott Macintyre gets through quickly, and he gets a slow-mo and a theme song to walk back to.
17.Lil Rounds, the mom whose apartment was destroyed by the tornado sails right on through. Simon says she is a good old fashioned singer. With a hard g.
I guess we had too much positivity because now we switch back to the No's: Felicia Barton (but I guess she got the last laugh), Ashley Hollister, and Frankie Jordan, who does a sing-off with
18. Jesse Langseth who despite a terrible song choice makes it, although Simon assures her she won’t get far.
19.Allison Iraheta, the 16-year-old sails through to season 8 and so does widower
20.Danny Gokey. His friend Jamar Rogers, despite a strong showing, goes home.
We quickly welcome
21. Ricky Braddy,
22. Matt Giraud (dueling piano player),
23.Ju'Not Joyner,
24.Jorge Nunez-Mendez,
25.Brent Keith (very cute), and
26.Stephen Fowler, who unlike Jamar, forgot his lyrics and stormed off the stage during his last performance.

27.Norman Gentle / Nick Mitchell yes friends, I put Norman first for a reason. They want him onstage. (Well not Simon-who gets a jab in before Nick leaves the room).
28. Jackie Tohn, the quirky girl with the guitar also gets a nod.

29. Tatiana del Toro. Yes idol fans, the worst has happened. Tatiana did not disappoint the crazy people who picked her either, as she wailed and screamed all the way out of the room. Vote for the worst.com is going to have a field day with her. Move over Sanjaya.

Jackie Midkiff does a sing-off with the very unstable
30. Nathaniel Marshall (head-banded cryer), who in Simon’s words wore the worst outfit in AI history.

It is all coming together quickly now folks, as
31. Jeanine Vailes,
32.Kai Kalama, (has the sick mom)
33.Anne Marie Boskovich, and
34.Kris Allen all get their welcome to Season 8.

We then had the average joe sing off, but if you had been counting you wouldn’t have fallen for this bit of hype as
35. Matt Breitzke, the welder, and
36. Michael Sarver, the oil-rigger both end up going through.

During the next three weeks, they'll perform in groups of 12 and it will be in America’s hands, with the exception of the wild card spots. I don’t know about you but I am ready for some singing. Enough with all the crying now and let’s have a competition!

When Will Tatiana be Leaving Us?

I realize I have been terribly remiss in my blogging friends, but I will summarize the first three days of Hollywood airings with the above question. There is some amazing talent that we have only been teased with. This was because of AI's fascination with this year's crazy girl, Tatiana. Out of 3 or 4 hours of television, I think almost 2 of it has been of her antics. If they don't eliminate her tomorrow night Gary has threatened not to watch. (He is lying, he could never miss Idol). Let's break down the performances quickly:

Adam Lambert draws the first position of the evening, and of all song choices he could have had, he goes with "Believe" by Cher. I love this guys voice enough that I can almost get over the Emo hair and eyeliner.

Matt Giraud is the dueling piano player, and since they are allowed to play instruments, he shows what he has got with “Georgia on my Mind”. It is a really great performance, and I am starting to get excited about some of these contestants. Oops, more Tatiana footage. Now I am crabby again.

Jamar Rogers is the first of the dynamic duo to perform and he spins "Hey There Delilah" with a little quirkiness that my husband hates, but I still see potential. Even Jamar is a little insecure about his performance afterwards.

Danny Gokey decides to work the judges over with Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance." It is a solid, heartfelt performance, if not a little manipulative for my tastes. I really do like this guy’s voice and his story, but if he starts getting all “extreme home makeover” on me, he is going to lose me quick.

Anoop Desai is up next and for whatever reason, even his bizarre song choice of "My Prerogative" works for me.
Jorge Nunez is pretty forgettable. I already forgot what he sang. It got Paula on her feet, but I am not sure that is saying much today. Everything seems to be wowing Paula.

Scott Macintyre sings a Daughtry song while accompanying himself on piano. He makes a point of reminding us that he didn’t see Paula give him a standing o.

Kendall Beard, the blond Texan from Puerto Rico starts the first of many renditions of "Before he Cheats?" I have already forgotten it.

Stevie Wright is only 16, and shows much potential on stage.
Lil Rounds is channeling Jennifer Hudson at the Grammy’s. It is great song for her, but for me it is all just a little too much.
Kristen McNamara (of the dysfunctional trio from group night) pretty much screams her Kelly Clarkson song choice. I remember her saying that she was sick, so I am trying to give her the benefit of a doubt.

Mishavonna Henson sang a song that I didn’t recognize, but I thought she sounded really different and I am intrigued.

Now we get to Tatiana Del Toro who is a complete lunatic. Now I think the powers that be at AI are trying to annoy us with this average singer who never follows instructions and after the mess of the song she sang, she spun and laughed and said she did great and felt great. That was before they put her in the room to await the final verdict.
Alexis Grace sings "Before he Cheats” and I am over it before the 4th word.
Kenny Hoffpauer sings Jason Mraz, but we are barely able to hear 4 bars of it before Ryan tells us for the 11th time that the decisions have been made final.
Jasmine Murray sings Jordin Sparks, and I am totally disappointed. I really liked this girl early on but the song doesn’t fit her voice.

Nathanial Marshall (remember the crying man yelling “this is NOT JUST YOUR DREAM”?) plays guitar and sings "Disturbia." It strangely appeals to me.
Joanna Pacitti is impressive. She spontaneously creates her own language, and not once throughout the entire song does she accidentally forget and use English. What in the world is this girl going to do when she has to memorize a new song each week?
Casey Carlson sings "Tattoo," and has memory problems as well.
Stephen Fowler actually comments that his song isn’t very hard, but even after starting over (Brook White) he can’t recall his lyrics.

Nick Mitchell keeps us hanging as to whether he will give us a serious performance or bring back his alter ego. Luckily for us, out came Norman Gentle with a bizarre but thoroughly entertaining “Gerogia”. Thank God for this guy, lest we all take this a little too seriously.

Anne Marie Boskovich is actually one of those 9 degrees of separation instances (or in this case 4). My friend Beth E has a California friend who hangs with the Boskovich’s. She is apparently as sweet as she seems on stage. She sings "I Hope You Dance," and her voice is really beautiful. I can’t help but pull for her since she is a friend of a friend of a friend.
Ju'Not Joyner sings "Hey There Delilah," really slowly. I mean, I almost nodded off.

Kaylan Loyd sings "If I Ain't Got You," and falls apart when Simon actually ends her song early.
Leneshe Young is sounds okay, but does not quite stand out the way she did in the first audition. Maybe it is because we didn’t get the 20 minute version of her back story this time.
Kai Kalama’s voice is just about shot from the lack of sleep and overuse. I am not sure I can evaluate how he did based on how fast they blew past his audition.
Michael Sarver, the oil rig guy gives a heartfelt performance. I can’t help pulling for this average Joe as he tries to give a better life to his wife and child.

After all the buildup and tension, (mainly from watching Paula try to drag that big old necklace from room to room) only one room gets eliminated. That room included Leneshe and Kaylan and Michael Castro, but nobody else I recognized. So we still have to watch Tatiana take that dreaded elevator ride to the judges tomorrow night.
Tune in tomorrow….
