I-Tunes Night on Idol

Tonight Idol decided to throw the contestants a curve ball and instead of a specific genre of music, the song choice is from I-tunes top download list. It is about time we give them the chance to be current and see who has that potential to be on the radio. As the evening begins, Ryan talks about the pressure as the Idols stare blankly past him. Paula, as always, is sporting the bling, Randy’s sweater looks like a bath robe, Kara looks ready for a black tie event, and what the heck is Allison Iraheta wearing? I know she is young, but is no one giving this girl fashion advice? Earlier in the week the contestants got to check out one of Ryan’s 15 jobs as the DJ who does the top 40 countdown.

Anoop Desai “Caught up”

Anoop decides he want s to get back to his stage personality and picks Usher because he wants to be and R & B artist. As he sings I have to say I am not sure what this. His vocal is strong, but on occasion the performance is really embarrassing. Usher is all about the moves, but Anoop really doesn’t dance as much as he marches around and makes some strange hand gestures. Oh, and there is the awkward finger touch with Paula. He has the r & b quality to his voice, but this song is not right for him. Randy is torn as well. Kara thought it was like a bunch of frat guys dared him to sing it. Paula loved his playful side, but she thought he needed to get more comfortable on stage. Simon thought it wasn’t original and it was a mess. It actually gave him a headache. Anoop gets a little fussy with Ryan about the bad comments and I think he will be sorry that he did that.

Megan Joy Corkery “Turn Your Lights down Low”

I am so excited that Megan finally sounds like she is singing a song that matches that voice. She looks beautiful and she starts pretty strong. The vocal gets a little shriek as it goes along, and at a point she starts looking down at the floor and seems a little lost in her own thoughts. I end up wishing I was watching it with the TiVo so that I could be finished. Kara hates it. She wanted Adele or something more current. Paula thinks that at this stage of the competition that we need to be taken by surprise. Her focal point seems to be a stool. Simon said that the song was boring and monotonous. He thought she was becoming indulgent. Randy said you can’t just pick songs you like. Megan really doesn’t seem to care because her “fans” will like it. Be careful Megan. Do you think anyone is buying a Ramiele CD right now?

Danny Gokey “What hurts the Most”

Danny wants to find the emotion and tone down the dancing and touch the audience. From the first note I am completely engaged. He has a really strong emotional connection to the song and you can’t help thinking about what he has gone through this year losing his wife. He has a powerful vocal and you can almost feel his pain. Paula said she would hit repeat in the car. Simon thought it was his best performance to date. Randy thought that tonight’s show started right here. Kara said that he moved everyone emotionally. She had Goosebumps. She wasn’t the only one.

Allison Iraheta “Don’t Speak”

She breaks out the guitar and starts off on a tender note, but the outfit is terrible and I am completely driven to distraction by that hair. She definitely puts her own spin on the song, but the vocal isn’t perfect and she has some problems with enunciating her words. Randy thought she rushed the song and said, “What is with the outfit”? Kara thought she didn’t need to dress so weird because she is a rocker with her voice and doesn’t need the props. Not her best performance, but it was good. Paula liked her playing the guitar. She thought her intonation and delivery were masterful. Simon is looking at Paula with the same expression I am. Simon said the dress was like something from the Adam’s family. He also thought she shouted the song.

Scott MacIntyre “Just the way you are”

My first thought is what is up with the hair? He actually sounds really good. I am impressed with both the vocal and his playing. I really enjoy Scott for the first time, but I have to be honest. If I want to listen to this song, I will be listening to the real deal. I would not be compelled to download this version; I am too big of a Billy fan. For Scott though, this is probably the right song for his voice and the first song that he has done that I actually recognized and will remember. Kara thought he picked the right song. She thought it was really honest. She loved his hair. (Sure she did). Paula is the most proud of Scott because he makes her forget about his challenge. Simon thought it was his best performance. Then he tells Scott thank goodness that he didn’t take Paula’s advice. After a few “rewind the tape” “no you rewind the tape”, Randy finally interrupts Simon and Paula’s fight to tell Scott that he was the best of the night.

Matt Giraud “You Found Me”

Matt is in the middle of the mosh pit with his piano and I am instantly annoyed. Why does he keep channeling Chris Martin? He has a pretty average vocal. The problem is that I am not sure who he is trying to be? When he plays the mimic game, he comes off pathetic. I am a huge Matt fan, and he has so much talent and potential, but this is so close to the original it confuses me. Paula appreciated that he went for a song that he loved, but she felt like it was more of a sound alike than an original. Simon said that he didn’t get it and thought it felt uptight and forced. Randy said the problem was it was the wrong song choice. He abandoned the soul and tried to force the rock. Kara said she wanted to see him commit to R & B or rock. She also said he was a talented guy and shouldn’t go home yet. At this point Gary says to me, “is that a mole on his head?” Are you kidding me?

Lil Rounds “I Surrender”

What the heck is she thinking? From the hair to the dress to the BORING song, I am so confused. I am not a thin woman, but I am pretty sure she couldn’t have found a less flattering dress. She truly has a diva incredible vocal, but there is absolutely nothing remaining of the Lil that I liked during the audition. I am so disappointed. Randy thought it was the wrong song, but she sang it really well. Kara said she had a great vocal too, but was looking for Mary J. Blige or Mariah. Paula wants to see the joy that she brought when they first saw her. Simon thought it was like a wedding performance and that it was like she was trying to pick the song she thought would keep her in the competition. He thought she was very old fashioned and her personality had been sucked out of her. Ryan asks Lil’s daughter if she wants to hit Randy. She nods her head yes, but instead she gives him a big hug, and I won’t be surprised if she is still there when we get back from the commercial break. Lil has to wipe the tears away.

Adam Lambert “Play that Funky Music”

Adam decided that he wanted to bring a completely different feel this week from his performance last week. Adam fans will be in heaven because he brings back the Adam scream. He has a great vocal and another stellar performance. He is so comfortable on stage and he gets the party started in the audience. The guy is in a different league, he just has so much stage experience. Paula says true genius shatters expectations. (Huh?) Simon said it was original and it broke the karaoke mold that had been going on all evening. Randy said “you are in the star zone”. Kara said every week she can’t wait to see what he is going to do next. I have to agree, he is always original and always surprising. Whether you like him or hate him, this guy isn’t going anywhere. (Sorry Linda Miller)

Kris Allen “Ain’t No Sunshine”

Kris abandons the guitar for the piano tonight and from the first note I am blown away. Every week this guy gets better and better, and seems to be growing into his stardom at the right pace for this competition. It is original and heartfelt and I LOVED it! It is my favorite of the night, and this will be getting a double play for me. Randy said this was the best Kris has done. Kara said “three words-that is artistry”. (This time she counts with the words so that she doesn’t have a miscount like a couple of weeks ago). Paula said he could make this song the first cut on his album. Simon said it was a great arrangement and it was his best performance of the night. It was a great way to close the show.

My bottom three is Anoop, Lil and Matt Giraud. More than likely Matt will go home, but with Anoop having the dreaded first slot and add to that his sassiness, he could end up in the bottom two as well. Tune in tomorrow for David Cook and Lady Gaga….

Motown Week

As I settle in to watch Idol from my spot overlooking the ocean in St. George Island, pinot noir in hand, I am struck by two things. One, Paula is in a dress that is frighteningly like one of Christine's recital costumes from about 10 or more years ago. Her friend Alexa got lipstick on the front of it somehow and Marcia had to pin a white towel over it right before they performed.Sorry, the memory is pretty vivid and I haved gotten off track. Maybe because she is a dancer, Paula was missing her ballet gear? I can tell you my daughter is 20 and she still wouldn’t put that costume back on. Now she is asking Ryan what he is doing after the show. I am not sure what is going on here, but I better reign myself back to the task at hand. Smokey Robinson is the mentor, and the theme is Motown. The idol’s start their week with a trip to Motown’s original recording studio. I am impressed with Smokey, as he has every one of these contestants hugging him like he is an old friend instead of a major superstar. I can’t go forward without dispensing the judge’s final words of wisdom. Paula tells them to challenge their artistic integrity. Really? You think she meant something else? Simon tells them to make the song original. Here we go:
Matt Giraud - "Let's Get it On"
Matt is able to impress Smokey during rehearsal, and he thinks Marvin would have loved it. Matt starts at the piano, and I am immediately struck by how much his confidence has grown. I think the positive comments from last week and from Smokey this week allowed him to relax and perform. It is really a great vocal. Randy was happy to see him challenging the other guys. Kara said he was coming out of his shell. Paula said he was respectful of the melody and Simon said it was a brilliant choice of song, and that it suited his voice. It was a great start to the evening.

Kris Allen - "How Sweet It Is"
Once again, Smokey loves it and tells him not to change a thing. I am not sure how Kris accomplishes taking a song that is so well known and making it his own, but he does. I am beginning to like this guy more every week. Kara loved that he didn’t do James Taylor’s version. Paula thought it was brilliant and she was proud. Simon told him he was having himself a great competition, but that now it is time to develop a swagger. Randy told him to keep hitting his stride.

Scott MacIntyre - "You Can't Hurry Love"
Scott decides to bring some back up singers to the piano in the hopes that Paula will think this is risk enough. He starts the song off very slow and sweet, but then it becomes very corny and old fashioned, although I can’t really criticize the vocal. I just hated the arrangement. Paula thought he brought something different and loved it. Simon couldn’t take it and thought it was too honky tonk. Randy thought it was hotel performance material and Kara said that she was thrilled he finally did a song up tempo, but she didn’t care for the liberties he took with the melody. This was a bottom three performance for sure.

Megan Joy Corkrey - "For Once in My Life"
For the second week in a row, they show the clip of the rehearsal and Megan sounds great, but then she starts performing and it just doesn’t sound the same. I am not sure what happens to her when she gets in front of an audience, if it is the adrenaline or nerves, but she starts hitting bum notes and she actually looks like the song gets away from her a couple of times. I am so disappointed because I keep waiting for her to have this great night, but I am starting to think it isn’t going to happen in time. Randy thought it was a train wreck. Kara said it was all over the place. Paula thought her beauty took her breath away, but it was the wrong song. Simon said “dear, dear dear, it was horrible”. Simon thought she was in terrible trouble after that performance. I think her second chances have run out.

Anoop Desai - "Ooh, Baby Baby"
I have to say that I am impressed with Anoop’s sincerity, and he handles the difficulties with the melody pretty well. The performance could use a little something, but I like what he did with the vocal. Kara said it is a hard song, and he did pretty good. Paula thought it was tender. Simon thought it was a great vocal, but he looked half asleep. Randy said next week bring back the energy and get the party going. He also commented on how strong the boys were singing.

Michael Sarver - "Ain't Too Proud To Beg"
Smokey gives his first constructive criticism of the evening with Michael and tries to explain to him how to sell the song, that he shouldn’t sweet talk it. Michael isn’t a trained musician, so he interprets this as singing louder. I can’t criticize his vocal, he is on key, but there is nothing believable about this performance. He has this bizarre grin on his face which makes me wonder if he is even aware of the lyrics to this song. Paula felt it was Las Vegas, and she actually looks like she is getting teary eyed giving him the bad critique. Simon couldn’t wait for it to be over and tells him at this point he is participating in this competition but will never win it. Randy says it has been sung too many times, and that he did too much with the runs. Kara cleared things up for Michael, at this point it is about artistry. Michael is in the bottom three for sure after that performance.

Lil Rounds - "Heatwave"
Lil tells Smokey that she was really moved to be able to participate this week. She decides to do the song dressed all 70’s and really keeps the vocal intact.
she hits some bum notes while she is rushing through it. This song really doesn’t do it for me. I miss the whole Mary J. Blige vibe she had going, and this is the second week where I see Lil losing ground because she doesn’t do anything original with the songs. Kara thought she was beautiful, but it was the wrong song for her. Paula thought it was classic Motown. Simon said she gave an authentic tribute, but as one of the best singers in the competition, she isn’t blowing them away.

Adam Lambert - "Tracks of My Tears"
Adam impresses Smokey with his version of this song, and is seated on stage with the band, all cleaned up and looking like a young Elvis Presley (or maybe K.D. Lang?). All of that aside, the vocal is stripped down and beautiful, and the emotion he expresses with his eyes is amazing. Smokey gives him a standing ovation, and so does Kara. She says she has six words, one of the best performances of the night, which Christine points out is really 8 words. Paula is excited. Simon disagrees with Kara, it is the best performance of the night and tells Adam he has emerged as a star. Randy can’t believe the guy's range and said it was unbelievably hot.

Danny Gokey - "Get Ready"
I am curious about what is going on with Danny’s footage, because it almost appears that the show is trying to mess with Danny’s popularity a little. They spend a long time on Smokey trying to get Danny to sing some lyrics that have been left to the background singers, and then hearing Danny say he will listen to Smokey, but then he comes out and doesn’t follow Smokey’s advice. It doesn’t matter, it is an energetic performance and he sings it extremely well.I am pretty sure that Danny has had little to do with the arrangement anyway. We will never know how the judges felt about it because as usual they have run over their time, and are now rushing through their comments in order to end the show on time. Paula says it is a first class performance. Simon says it is clumsy and amateurish. Randy thought it was great and Kara loved his personality.

At this point I will bring up the fact that halfway through the show Paula pulled some sticker books and crayons out of her tutu for Simon. Apparently there was a sharpie in that pack of fun as well. You will understand soon.

Allison Iraheta - "Papa Was a Rolling Stone"
Allison impresses Smokey with her passion, and she really closes the show on a powerful note. I lose the lyrics once or twice, but she gives an authentic vocal that is way too mature for her 16 years. Randy said it was blazing hot. Kara instructs America to vote for her, it was amazing. Paula was distracted by the sharpie mustache that Simon has apparently drawn on her face, but I think she liked it as well. Simon said it was one of Allison’s best performances.
This is a talented group, but as always happens on Idol, you can start to see who is in for the long haul and who is ready to head out away from the stress of the competition. Michael, Scott and Megan weren’t in the same league tonight, and I think it will be Megan who goes home, although it should be Michael. Tune in tonight……

Country Week

Let me first say that I am not a huge fan of country week. It is not my favorite music. As Ryan gives his intro, I am struck by how odd Meagan looks, very pasty and her hair all swoopy. After a tribute to the Grand Ole Opry that culminates in Carrie Underwood being invited to join as a member, we find out that our mentor is Randy Travis.

1. First up is Michael Sarver who chooses "Ain't Going Down til the Sun Comes Up". These would be the only lyrics that I have grasped since he started. Randy Travis warned him to make sure he didn't lose the lyrics. Oh wait, I think I just recognized the words pickup truck. Oh dear. This is really not my thing at all and I can't wait for it to end. Before you think I am putting down his singing, I guess the vocal is fine. He seems very natural and relaxed on stage. I just hate this song. Randy thought it was a cool song choice but didn't think he showed anything new with his vocals. Kara was amazed that he could memorize all of those lyrics. Did he? Who could know? Paula thought it suited him. Simon couldn't understand a single word. Thank you, I was beginning to think I was just crabby.

2. Allison Iraheta is next and selects "Blame it on your Heart". Randy Travis was amazed at her vocal maturity. She rocks it out, and even though the song is spread over like 6 notes, she actually looks even more comfortable than last week. Not ever having heard this song before, I think it suits her and she sounds great. Kara was amazed at how she made the song her own. Paula thought it was "rock" solid, (she didn't do the air quotes, but she might as well have). Simon thought it was good but a bit tuneless and precocious. Randy thought it was dope.

3. Kris Allen picks a song that is a favorite of mine, "To Make You Feel my Love". Randy Travis thought Kris was a great ballad singer. I absolutely love the stripped down vocals, and for the first time I am getting why he is here. It is an extremely honest and pure performance, and I was touched. My only criticism is that they didn't need the reverb. Paula was pleasantly surprised. She loved his "vulnerability". Oh yes I did just do it again. Simon thought it was terrific. Great song choice, great control, and Simon noticed him for the first time. Randy loved the tender moments from his dawg Kris. Randy is really profound this evening. Kara didn't hear country, only Kris. While they are running the numbers Ryan can't help but poke fun at the whole "vulnerable" thing.

4. Lil Rounds is next and she picks "Independence Day" and says she is going to hold back on the R & B. What? Isn't this why she is here? Randy Travis asks her to slow the tempo down. I am not going to lie, I don't like it. She doesn't sing bad, she has got a fantastic voice, but it feels fake. Like from the outfit to the song she is trying on someone else. Even Carrie Underwood didn't sing it as good as Martina way back when, and Lil is not Carrie Underwood. Randy thought is was interesting and ambitious, but not his favorite. Kara said that everyone knows she is a great singer and she sang what she felt, so good for her. Paula thought it was "spot on". (you will be cursing at me soon, I know but I can't help myself). She also thought it would have been better if she had only sung one verse. Simon called her Little instead of Lil and said she looked like she was being forced to sing a song at a wedding, at which point Lil kind of, sort of sasses him. Simon said it just wasn't her.

5. Adam Lambert picks "Ring of Fire". I have got to hand it to Randy Travis. It takes real restraint to say "I don't know too many men who wear nail polish" when what he wanted to say is "please don't touch me". He starts off singing this weird middle eastern version of the song and it is like nails down a chalkboard for me. Not that he sings off key, it is just a painfully bad arrangement. Who would ruin a perfectly good song like this? The performance is ridiculous with the crazy eyes. Kara was kind when she said it was strange, but she liked it. Paula thought he was true to himself like an artist. Simon thought it was indulgent rubbish. When he said "what the hell was that?" it pretty much summed it all up for me. Randy thought it was 9 inch nails-like and current. I guarantee you Trent Reznor is thinking "don't drag me into this". I am equally sure that there won't be any takers at the I-store on that piece of crap. Why didn't he pick an Elvis Song? He might be needing his butt to be saved by the judges tomorrow night.

6. Scott MacIntyre chooses "Wild Angels" and Randy Travis suggests that he speed the tempo up a little. As he sings I am thinking that he looks really comfortable and that his vocal is better. He has some rough spots, and his falsetto is a little painful, but he is true to himself with the song. Problem is, what is this song? He just finished singing and if I hadn't written down the title I couldn't recall one thing about it. I think that Scott did the best that he has the capacity to do. He just isn't a superstar. That being said, there are really no bad singers left in this competition, so I did enjoy it. Paula says it is another impressive performance, but she wants him away from the piano and not to use it as a crutch. Sure Paula, maybe they can choreograph a few steps for him WAY at the back of the stage so he doesn't get carried away and we have an Idol incident. Simon says he needs a song choice that is memorable and tells Paula that she is disrespecting him and that Elton and Billy sing behind a piano and no one tells them it is a crutch. Paula is not pleased, but lacking a command of the English language, just says "your being disrespectful" and then hits him and pouts. Randy is looking for crazy vocals and tells Scott that once again, he was too safe. Kara wants him to up his game.

7. Alexis Grace is up next and picks "Jolene" which Randy Travis is quite impressed with. I am expecting her to do well, but the awkward walk down the steps seems to have started us off in an odd place. She is also picking really awkward places to take her breaths and it is causing weird phrasing. The big high note was painful, but other than that she sings on key. I think I was just expecting her to blow me away so I am slightly disappointed. Randy thought it was just okay. Kara thought it wasn't edgy enough. Paula thought it was effective because (you guessed it) she was "vulnerable". Simon thought it was okay but it wasn't original. She chats comfortably with the judges and says if America sees fit to bring her back she will bring back the edge. She has a great voice, and I think she will be back.

8. Danny Gokey is next and butchers "Jesus Take the Wheel" in rehearsal with Randy Travis. I don't know anything about Randy Travis as a singer, but as a gentleman I am impressed. All night he has been so complimentary of our little Idols, and I am really impressed with what a nice man he is. Whatever nerves Danny needed to work out in rehearsal, he did, because his performance is fantastic. I felt it through the TV. He is consistently good at picking songs that not only showcase his voice, but who he is. Kara was not wowed by the first half but loved the second half. Paula disagreed and loved how he built the story. Simon agreed with Paula (they are all made up now) and thought he was fantastic but asked him if he knew it was 80 degrees in LA because he was dressed for a polar expedition. Randy thought he needed to support his notes in the verses. Whatever Randy. Some of these guys would love to be Danny having a rough week.

9. Anoop Desai is next and picks "You Were Always on My Mind". Randy Travis is initially worried, but was in love with his arrangement. I was too. It was so much better than last week, and really showcased not only his vocal range but his ability to connect with the audience. It was surprisingly simple, but very good. Paula said "Anoop is back" and that she was proud of him. Simon said from zero to hero in one week. He picked a good song, and it was one of his favorites from the whole night. Randy told him this was why he was wanted in the competition and that the arrangement was dope. Kara said he took a classic song and had the best performance of the night with it.

10.Meagan Corkery picks "I'll go Walking After Midnight" and Randy Travis thought it was totally unexpected and original. I have to admit I am intrigued when we see the clip of her in rehearsal because it sounds great. Then when she starts singing I am thinking that this is not remotely in the same key she just sang it in on the clip and she appears to be struggling a little. She is styled extremely glamorous, and this song is definitely a good fit for her personality. She is able to bring the jazzy quality, even in the lower key. Randy loves it. Kara says she is amazing to get up with influenza and perform. Paula goes one step further and says she has been in the hospital with influenza b. Simon says it was so much better than last week, but not to let them style away her quirkiness. I am thinking let this poor thing sit down. I hope she goes through, because what a terrible disadvantage to have to perform when you are that sick. I thought, considering what she was going through, it was fantastic.

11. Last up is Matt Giraud and he sings "So Small". Randy Travis thought he made the Carrie Underwood classic his own. Before he starts we see Paula smelling (licking?) Simon's arm? This was a great performance start to finish, and he is getting better and better as he gets comfortable with that big stage. It is passionate and an original take, and I love it. I thought he had star quality up there, and that the song was perfect for what he wanted to do with it. Kara loves it too and calls him an artist. Paula tries to say authenticity, but alas, she can't. There is some other babble about heart piercing? Simon thought he out sang Danny Gokey and said that Matt reminded him of Michael Buble. He also said it was one of the best performances of the night. He was Randy's favorite of the night. In Randy's words "baby, you got it going on".

Ryan says it best with "we have got a competition here". It is an amazing night of singing with the exception of a few.
Bottom three are Scott, Lil and Adam. I pick Scott to go home, but if one of the other two go it will be interesting to see if the judges use their save this early on.

I won't be watching until Thursday,(fox tickets) but promise my comments then. Tune in.....

Judges Choice

It was no surprise to me that Jorge went home, but truly Jasmine had a better vocal than did poor Anoop. I had bunko at my house last night, so my focus truly wasn't on the show, but I did get this much out of it. Idol has decided to take the show back from Vote for the Worst.com. This may sound controversial, but actually after reading about how it will work, it is not a bad idea. The judges can "save" one contestant one time only, if they are unanimous, up until we reach the top 5. The kicker is if they invoke the "save" the next week two contestants will go home. This is how the French version of American Idol works, and the reason they have gone to it is to save the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, and Michael Johns in the event that the American callers lose their collective common sense one evening.
After the announcement, Jasmine and Jorge had to feel pretty bad. No save for them.
One or two comments about Kelly and Kanye. Kelly, I LOVE to turn that song up on my I-touch when I am on the treadmill. It gets me walking faster. Kanye, please invest in a belt.
Tune in next week...

We Begin..

The show begins a little different this year, with Ryan looking quite conservative in a dark suit and the judges coming on to the stage as a loud speaker announces their names. Paula stays true to her cleavage as she has all season and looks all Bjork-like in her feather topped dress. As always the judges have their beginning words of wisdom. Randy tells them to bring it, Kara tells Ryan that she will have to be harder than ever to get this talented bunch narrowed down to the 2 or 3 who may have hits on the radio. Paula says don't be afraid of using the stage and don't let it consume you. (I giggle a lot when Paula starts to talk). Simon says don't forget the words, and don't be swallowed up by the stage. See? He doesn't even listen to the other judges. He then drops the bombshell that two will get the boot tomorrow night. Ryan announces that we will be hearing Michael Jackson songs. Hey, I thought no one was supposed to touch Michael Jackson and here we are for the second season in a row being stuck in a quandary.
Go figure.

1. Lil Rounds talks of Memphis music and BBQ and of her family. She chooses "The way you make me feel". The vocal is really good, but I am not digging the dancing. Now my mother has pointed out that her pants give the unfortunate illusion that she has a man's anatomy, which completely distracts me for the rest of the song. And let me tell you, she didn't word it this kindly. She is a great singer, but I am too fixated on her pants. Randy loves it. Kara says that everyone else will be nervous about what Lil just did. Paula complimented her on her softness, that she is a force to be reckoned with, oh, and something about angels. Simon thought it was a lazy song choice. He also agreed with Mom on the outfit.

2. Scott MacIntyre was next and talked about his blindness and how it led him to music. His sister is also visually impaired, which Joe and my mom noticed last week. He plays piano and sings "Keep the faith" which is unfamiliar to me, but it definitely is miles better than his last performance. I will not be buying it on I-tunes tomorrow, but it was a nice vocal and heartfelt. Kara told the audience that he just learned the song on piano this week. She loved that he delivered a hopeful message. Paula thought it was magical (giggle).Simon hated the song because nobody knows it and you can't be artistic on this show. Randy liked the song but thought the performance was too safe and old fashioned. I am not sure how dangerous Scott is going to be able to be Randy.

3.Fan favorite Danny Gokey is up next and his family footage makes him even more likable. Anyone who sings their kids homework with them is all right by me. He sings "P.Y.T." and starts off slow but breaks out into a groove. I almost get up and dance with Paula, it is that good. Lil Rounds, you officially have some competition. Paula tells him to take it all in, and some other stuff about closing your eyes and hearing a true artist, and then she cries, and Simon just starts to crack up. Simon tells him the vocals were brilliant but the dancing was hideous. He followed that up by saying it didn't matter, he was really good. Randy loved the dancing and the singing. He felt it was passionate. Kara said he sang with joy. This guy is a natural, and he will be just fine tomorrow night.

4.Michael Sarver (you know, the oil rig guy?) is next and when he picks up his little girl and she says "those are happy tears", I get a little misty. He sings "You are not alone" and it is miles better than "I don't wanna be". He has a great vocal and he is all heart up there. His performance showed his nerves, but I am so happy that he was able to have this performance. He won't win, but I hope that he gets the future he needs for his family because of it. Simon says he gave 110% and what he lacked in the vocal he made up for with passion. Randy was glad he went back to the r & b feel. Kara said that tonight showed her that he could really sing. Paula said he was likable and that he was in sti nct u ally (yes I spread that word out on purpose) perfect.

5. Jasmine Murray talks to Ryan about the glam squad and gave a glimpse of her wonderfully supportive family. She sings "I'll be there" and she looks gorgeous. There are a couple of the notes that go a little flat when she is singing them, but overall she has a pretty nice vocal. I am starting to think about this in terms of who I will remember, because for the first time there really hasn't been a singer up there that has had a horrible performance like in seasons past. So given those conditions I am not sure I will remember this particular song tomorrow. The singer yes, but the performance no. Randy liked how she mixed Mariah and Michael's versions. Kara was surprised at her great stage presence and thought she sold the song. Paula thought she had poise but a few flat notes. Simon thought it was nice control at the end but the performance was a little robotic.

6. Kris Allen talks about his beautiful wife of five months and how it is hard to be away from her. He sings with his guitar "Remember the Time" and I am thinking this Michael song is a much better fit than "Man in the Mirror" was. I don't really hear the guitar, so that seems a little silly to me. Mom points out that there sure aren't many lyrics in this song. Overall, I think he sounds pretty good, but I am not sure I really like the song. This guy is really darling, and he looked much more comfortable with his guitar and I enjoyed him, despite the lack of lyrics. Kara loved him with his guitar and points out that he helped the other contestants prepare during the week. We now have a small interruption where Paula accuses Simon of trying to undress her. Then during her critique she makes this weird fist and goes cross-eyed. (I am giggling again). Simon thought the song was interesting as did Randy.Simon thought he should have kept the wife under wraps for a few more weeks. Randy said "very well job done".

7. Allison Iraheta's family clip showed her giving this hysterical department store performance for like 20 people. I loved the shaky dad video. She selected "Given to me" and for the first time I am not thinking that someone is doing a Michael song. It sounds like she wrote it herself. She has that rocker rough quality, but she is raw and very believable. Paula thinks it's mind boggling that she is only 16. Simon says it was a good performance, very confident. Randy said she was born with it. Kara says she distinguishes herself by being the rock girl.

8. Anoop Desai is next and he chooses "Beat It". First let me say that I love this guy. He is the guy next door. Unfortunately this song only points out his vulnerabilities and doesn't showcase his voice. He is a darling guy, but up against this line up, it isn't enough. Paula thought he shouldn't have touched that song. Simon thought it was horrible and light weight. Randy said wrong choice. Kara felt disconnected from Anoop. He stays composed and says he would love to come back and try again.

9. Jorge Nunez shows his large family in Puerto Rico and then delivers a very bubble gum performance of "Never can say goodbye". Don't get me wrong, he has a beautiful voice, but the smile is too much and the song is not made current. I was pretty much bored to tears. Randy thought it was old fashioned. Kara thought he lost his emotional connection. Paula has love for him, but I got the impression she wasn't blown away either. Simon said it was bad. Like the Michael Jackson song.

10. Meagan Corkery is up next and points out her brother in the audience who looks just like Philip Seymour Hoffman. She looks gorgeous, but the minute she says she is singing "Rockin Robin" I am nervous. Let's just say, I am not a fan. I think I have watched one too many 6-8 year old kids dance to it at dance competitions. She sounds on key, and has a really unique and great voice, but I really hate this song. I am thinking the chicken dance on Arrested Development as she Caw Caws it at the end. (For those who haven't watched that show-you need to). Kara said she injected her personality. Paula loves her quirky, unique tone, but she was missing it most of the song. Simon said it was a stupid song choice and thought the performance was awkward. Randy agreed.

11. Adam Lambert is next and talks about how trying to make it in this industry has given him a thick skin. He chooses "Black or White" and he rocks it out. He is a total performer, and I find myself so captivated that I forgive the couple of notes that I don't find perfect. I also am close to forgiving him for the black nail polish. But not totally. While his performance was a ten, the vocal at times was a little crazy for me. Paula is falling all over herself she is so worked up. While she is flailing around, I notice a large crystal cube hanging from her wrist. Was that there all night? She rambles so long that the last singers of the night will get no time for critiques. Simon said it was in a totally different league. Randy said you could make a record right now. Kara hoped MJ was watching. (I really doubt that he was.)

12.Matt Giraud was next and he sang "Human Nature" while accompanying himself on the piano. I think he showed off his great range and falsetto, but he showed his nerves just a little bit. He definitely gives the song his spin, and has a really solid vocal.By the end of the song he got secure and I thought sounded really great. Overall, I think is was just hard to take the mood down a notch after Paula's "manic spell" about Adam. Plus, the judges are totally rushing through poor Matt's critique. Randy said it was awesome. Kara loved it. Paula was blown away. Simon said it was a good solid performance. The end, now get off the stage.

13. Alexis Grace has a pretty wild looking daddy, but her little girl is about as darling as they come. She picks "Dirty Diana" and she attacks the performance. Almost a little too much. She has a really strong voice for a little thing, and while at times it I didn't care for the way she interpreted the song, the girl has mad skills. Kara said she was a naughty girl and she liked it. Paula said "watch the over singing" and Simon said it wasn't as good as she thought it was. Randy said good not great. At this point my DVR was finished taping, despite how fast the judges tried to finish on time, so no recap at our house.

I have not a clue how many they will put in the bottom, but my bottom 4 are Anoop, Jorge Nunez, Michael Sarver and Meagan Corkery (sorry-I love her but hate Rockin Robin). I think Anoop and Jorge will go home. This is going to be a hard season to call, but I promise to keep at it!

The Top 13

Hi All. Did you miss me? I have been faithfully watching and keeping close track of all my sarcastic thoughts about idol these last weeks, but I apologize that due to watching the performances directly before the results shows, I have not been able to blog in a timely manner. I do have plenty to say about these talented singers, and since we all know who they are I am just going to share those now.
1. Adam Lambert, age 26 from Los Angeles, CA. He has great experience having been in the traveling cast of Wicked. He has real presence and a fantastic voice, but a tendency to try strange arrangements of songs. He will have fans for sure, but there will be just as many who won't like him. I think if he can lay off the skinny jeans and the eyeliner I will be more inclined to enjoy him. The guy has a great voice.

2. Alexis Grace, the 21 year old single mom from Memphis, TN has a huge voice for a little girl. I am not sure how she will do against some of the other singers in this thirteen, but she has earned her place and I am anxious to see her next performance.

3. Allison Iraheta is the 16 year old from Los Angeles who wowed us with Alone. She is one of those undiscovered talents that could surprise us once she gets some vocal coaching and some styling. She sings from her gut, and if she can keep those shaking hands under control I think the she will find she was meant to be on that stage.

4. Anoop Desai, our surprise number 13, is a 21 year old from Chapel Hill, NC. He is extremely likable and has a great voice, but I don't know if could beat out some of the incredible singers that he will go head to head with in this group. I was thrilled to see him get his surprise invitation to the party.

5. Danny Gokey is a 28 year old from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who lost his wife four weeks before the auditions last year. He is a natural talent and already extremely popular. I predict that he will go far in this competition.

6. Jasmine Murray is the 16 year old from Starkville, MS that has been branded by Kara as the package performer. After her rendition of Reflections last night, I think she has proven that she is more than just a beautiful pop singer.

7. Jorge Nunez is the 20 year old from Carolina, Puerto Rico that worked so hard to master English for his performance. He has a beautiful voice and a different sound than the others in the group. I think his story will touch a lot of viewers.

8. Kris Allen is the 23 year old from Conway, Arizona that looks about 18. He has boyish good looks that will probably appeal to the junior high girls, but he also has a nice voice. I am not sure that when he has to be compared to Adam, Danny, or Matt that he will last long, but he is certainly no Sanjaya.

9. Matt Giraud is the 23 year old dueling piano player from Kalamazoo, Michigan. He brought back the soul during the wild card show, and it was no surprise at all to me that he got in. This guy has a great voice, and if they let him play there is no telling how long he'll be in the game.

10. Megan Joy (yes, this is how it is listed on the AI website) is a quirky 22 year old from Sandy, Utah. She has the dreaded sleeve down one arm (memories of Carly Smithson), but for some reason on her I don't mind. It kind of fits her odd style, and she is so gorgeous you don't take your eyes off of that smile. I think if she can find the right song, she could really blow people away.

11. Michael Sarver is the 27 year old from Jasper, Texas who works on an oil rig. He vocally is really stretched in this competition, as there are definitely better singers with much better stage presence. I think he gives hope to those kids out there who are from circumstances and places where talent may go forever undiscovered. I hope he does well, for this competition started out for guys like him.

12. Scott MacIntyre is the 23 year old from Scottsdale, Arizona who is legally blind. I think it is amazing how he has overcome his disability to reach his dreams, and I like his voice and his determination. That being said, I don't think his voice holds a candle to most of the other singers in this competition. In other words, I am not sure how long he will be around, and how long the disability should be the reason that he is in the competition if he doesn't have a good performance.

13. Lil Rounds, the 23 year mother of three from Memphis is going to be a force to be reckoned with in this competition. As far as I see it, she is going to have to have a couple of crappy shows and the rest are going to have to (in Randy's words) "blow it out the box" if they want to unseat her.

Next week we have Kanye West and Kelly Clarkson on the show and the battle will begin. Some random thoughts.

Do you think Simon had a red mark after Paula's Indian burn?
What do you think Tatiana did the day after the show?
Do you think her family advised her not to stand with her legs that far apart while in a dress ever again?

I will be doing my best to keep the blog going, and I am counting on Gene's counter blog starting next week. I think it promises to be an exciting and entertaining season. Take that Vote for the worst.com! Join me next Tuesday....
