Top 8 Girls

This was an interesting night on American Idol, and from where I was sitting the boys out sang the girls. Despite 6 seasons and 3 weeks of being told to move away from the Whitney and Mariah grouping of song choices, some of these girls just don’t get it. Wednesdays our friend Caitlin comes to watch Idol with the family, so there is definitely much discussion and hysterical laughter throughout the one hour broadcast and this week was no exception. Although he managed to sneak in a comment about Kristy Lee without a foot cramp this week, Gary won’t get away with all of his comments tonight. More on that later. As the show opens Randy tells the girls that they better bring it. Paula says hopefully they picked the right song, and Simon says that no one is safe. I would certainly agree with that assessment. Here we go:

Asia’H Epperson "I Wanna Dance With Somebody"

Asia’H’s most embarrassing moment was when she was an extra on a Roller Skating movie and in the course of showing off her mad skills, skated into a set light. She comes out with her old look (I was not a fan of the extensions) and although she looks like the old Asia’H, I am instantly disappointed in the song choice. She gets Paula dancing with her, but I am thinking it sounds like she is singing out of her nose and it doesn’t feel as natural as her very first performance. Randy recorded this song, and said that she proved that she deserved to be here and that she was HOT! Paula started in on the rambling, and eventually got to saying that she thought she nailed it while Simon rolled his eyes. Simon said it was a second rate Whitney, actually worse than that because she did not change the original. She responds with a blown kiss, which gets Simon to say that he thought she deserved to be in the top 12. I was initially a huge fan, but I am a little worried about Asai’H after these last two performances.

Kady Malloy "Who Wants to Live Forever"

Kady reveals that in the 9th grade she butchered "Beautiful" when trying out for a talent show, and in exiting the stage managed to top off the embarrassment by tripping over a microphone cord and upsetting the speaker system. I will say for Kady that she changed the song to the point where I barely recognized the Queen hit. She also was really glammed (not sure this is a word) up and looked great. She sang better than she did the last two performances, but it was an odd pick for me and not very memorable. Randy said that it was a weird song choice for him and he thought she was pitchy when she hit the lower notes. Paula disagreed and thought there was magic in those tender notes. Simon thought it was miles better than last week, but he has a problem with her empty performances and her lack of personality. She is almost robotic, and he thinks she is in trouble. Sorry. I didn’t think it was memorable enough to make the top 12. Sorry.

Amy Overmeyer "I Hate Myself for Loving You"

Amy’s story was about a time that she left the fire-pit going on the deck one night. The oversight led to a burned down the deck, melted siding, and the scorching of half of her pool. Hmmm. could there have been alcohol involved? That’s quite an event to go undiscovered during the night. They certainly weren’t letting her start a fire pit in grade school unsupervised. If Amy was able to garner enough votes after "Carry On", she should soar through after this showing. While I thought she sang so much better than last week and definitely dialed back "The Look", she seemed to have lost a little confidence. She spent a lot of the number looking down. Randy thought it was HOT. Paula loved her face and thought she found her niche. Simon thought it was fantastic, and seemed to get a little annoyed that she wasn’t more excited about the good review. After telling her to smile, she forces herself, and ends up looking extremely uncomfortable and unhappy. Maybe Amanda would prefer to end her Idol journey at this point. She sure does not seem to be enjoying herself anymore. I don’t think she will go anywhere this week, but she better find some enthusiasm or the viewers will become just as annoyed as Simon.

Carly Smithson "I Drove All Night"

Carly’s embarrassing moment happened when she popped in a bar on her break from work and got her leg caught in a railing. Her friend used butter and bathroom soap to extricate her. It is at this point that my husband Gary (who has watched every episode of Idol with us, including the auditions) says, "hey, what is up with her pulling an Irish accent?" Are you feeling my pain yet? My first comment about Carly, is that her hair looks so much better parted on the side with a little curl in it. She looks great, and sounds great, but why this song? Randy says it is a great performance and she hit the high notes. Paula says she is like a dependable dog. What the heck? Oh, and she also is totally into her niche. Simon said it was a boring song choice and her voice is so much better than the songs that she is choosing. All of this aside, she had a great vocal, and she totally deserves the chance to be in the top 12.

Kristy Lee Cook "Faithfully"

Kristy Lee’s embarrassing moment should have been during that interview. She apparently, at 7 (not 2 or 3) pretended to be a dog for a long time, complete with her own dog bowl. She puts a country twang into the melody, which actually suits her pretty well. I notice that she isn’t standing like she is on a horse tonight, but her eyes are shut through much of the performance and her tongue is red like a jolly rancher. She actually sounds pretty good, but it is nothing I cared to replay. Of course that could be said about most of the performances this evening. Randy said she capitalized on two things he loves, dogs and Journey. He really liked the country spin. Paula thought she could release a record of this song and do well with it. She had nothing but "positivity to say". Oh my. Simon thought it was a little forgettable. I would have to agree. I worry about her a little after tonight.

Ramiele Malubay "Against All Odds"

Ramiele rode her pink bike in the 5th grade to a boy’s house that she liked and left him with her picture. Unfortunately he and his mother made fun of it. She does a nice job with the vocal, but I have heard this song way more than I ever wanted to and I am not necessarily enthralled. Randy says she needs confidence but that she did a really good job. Paula says that she has a beautiful face. This is the last coherent thing that comes out of her mouth. From there we travel to and away from the colors, the textures, the mutt pound, and back to Ramiele who is looking quite confused. After a few moments of incredulously staring at Paula, Simon says it was old-fashioned, but because she is little, it was good. From here we delve into the weird as Paula tries to explain to Ryan that during the singing Simon was talking about the moth and the melon ball and then Randy chimes in and says that Simon thinks the songs come out of yogurt. Simon is laughing so hard that it is contagious, although I have no idea what to make of it all.

Brooke White "Love is a Battlefield"

Brooke’s embarrassing moment happened after church one day when she jumped on her dad’s back and began to tell him how hungry she was. Only it wasn’t her dad. Brooke’s song is the one from this evening that I actually wanted to hear a second time, and it was my favorite from the first note. I loved the way she was accompanied with only an acoustic guitar and her delivery on the edge of the stage. Randy liked it and thought it was very interesting. Paula loved the song choice and thought she sounded pure, although she wished she that would have built the band in halfway through the song. Simon totally disagreed with Paula and said she was original and did everything right and it was a great performance. There is something very easy going about Brooke, and I think she will be around for a while.

Syesha Mercada "Saving All My Love"

Syesha wrote a note to a boy asking him to check whether or not he liked her and gave him a piece of gum. He told on her, but kept the gum. She looks great from the waist up, but I am not digging the velvet shorts. She always gives a great vocal and performance, but I am so sick of this type of song that I can barely pay attention. I didn’t like it when it was first released, so I can barely tolerate it now. That being said, Syesha always tries to put her style into the song, and she is beautiful to watch. We must be out of time because the judges say quickly: Randy-good, Paula-sophisticated & lovely, and Simon-good but predictable. Randy and Paula think the girls brought it, but Simon says there were two or three interesting performances and the rest were disappointing. I think the most entertaining things about the evening were Brooke’s performance and Simon dissolving into the giggles.

I can’t see Kady getting any more chances, but my second pick I am less sure of. I think either or Asia’H or Kristy Lee could be in trouble. I am going to say Asia’H because Kristy Lee is the only one with a country vibe in the competition right now and I think she has potential. Tune in tonight…..
